Birthday Girl by Penelope Douglas Review

I read this a few months ago when I was looking for a stand alone since I was burnt out on reading series of books. I had heard a lot of good things about this book and was excited to read it.

The book starts off with Jordan and, her boyfriend, Cole being down on their luck and having to move in with Cole’s dad, Pike. Pike is mysterious and living a stable life that he worked hard to build. Pike is also the man that Jordan celebrated her birthday with when her boyfriend forgot about her. This book is full of forbidden romance and sexual tension making it a difficult book to put down.

I really like the characters, especially the female main character, Jordan. I thought that she was a good representation of a young woman trying to fin her way in life and wanting to be taken seriously. She knew what she wanted and went after it. Cole was a perfect jerk of a character. AND PIKE! The character development that he goes through leads to a very sweet end of the book.

The theme of the book in my opinion is going for what makes you happy no matter what. The plot was predictable but nevertheless a very amusing read. I like the time gap jumps that happen at the end of the book, giving a sense that there may not be a happily ever after. This book had a moderate pace. As the relationship progressed so did the spicy scenes but I would have like more scenes of Pike and Jordan together that did not involve sex. The end of the book made sense to skip over some months to keep everything on pace with the book ending on a satisfying and positive note.

I gave this book a 3.5 stars out of 5. This was exactly what I was looking for at the time to read. It had all the elements that I was wanting. I’m giving it a 3.5 because I had to be in a certain mood to read this book and enjoy it. This book was also just not the best book I’ve read and did not leave any lasting impact. While the book is good and I am happy that I read it, I also think that it was over hyped.
