Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus Review

The perfect stand alone book for any woman who strives to be more than whatever box society has put her into. Chemistry affects every part of our lives, even cooking. Set in a time when women are thought to belong in the kitchen, Elizabeth Zott challenges herself and viewers of her show to break outside of the gendered bubble and encourages them to do what makes them the happiest.

Elizabeth Zott is a scientist, but currently she is working as a cooking tv host, where she teaches housewives the chemistry of cooking. But how did she end up there? Purely by accident. Even with her success and fame she is missing working on her chemistry research. This is a story about love, loss, and perseverance.

This book is not a genre of book that I typically like to read so it is hard for me to say how it measures up to others like it. Many feminist views and points are brought up throughout the novel which was interesting to explore. Overall, his book has opened me up to reading more books outside of my comfort zone.

With that being said, I did not NOT enjoy the book but I also do not agree with it being listed as one of the best books of the year (so far). I found that the main character, Elizabeth Zott, was extremely annoying. She is too smart for her own good and has limited social skills. She does show a decent amount of growth across the novel and uses her hard headedness to her advantage, but that did did not make up for all the parts of her character that I did not enjoy.

In my opinion, the most interesting part of the story was the first half. The problem is that first half of the book is just there to set up the rest of the main problems in the book. I had a lot of trouble picking this book up, but event though the novel was not that interesting to me, I did enjoy the theme of the novel. This book challenges people, especially women, to go outside of their comfort zones and do anything that they need to (within reason) to achieve their dreams.

I would give this book 3 out of 5 stars. The book wasn’t terrible and I can see why it is so highly recommended. Personally, I do not read much of this genre because I have trouble staying engaged, but I would recommend this book to any of my friends looking t read something outside of their comfort zone. It was an easy, and fun (when I could get into it) read, that I wish I had enjoyed more.
